The approach

Semaglutide works on the GLP-1 pathway, slowing gastric emptying and reducing appetite signalling, which lowers food intake and improves glucose control. It is effective, but it is still a medicine with real contraindications, side effects and a correct way to be used.
Our approach is assessment first. We look for the metabolic and hormonal reasons behind weight gain, confirm there is nothing that makes treatment unsafe, and then decide together whether semaglutide belongs in your plan.

Ozempic, Wegovy and semaglutide
Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide, at different dose ranges and with different registered indications. Which product is appropriate, and whether it is available, depends on your clinical picture and on supply in South Africa. We discuss this with you directly rather than promising a specific brand.
Side effects and how they are managed
Nausea, reflux, constipation and early satiety are common, particularly when doses increase. Most settle with slower titration, meal structure, hydration and fibre. Less common but important risks, including pancreatitis and gallbladder problems, are explained before you start and monitored during treatment.
Protecting muscle and metabolic health
Appetite suppression reduces total intake, including protein. Without attention to protein and resistance training, part of the loss can be lean tissue. We track body composition and set protein and training targets to minimise unnecessary lean-mass loss.
What happens after the medication phase
Appetite regulation returns when GLP-1 treatment stops, and some weight regain is common without a plan. We build the maintenance phase into treatment from the start, including nutrition, training, sleep and, where needed, a structured tapering approach.
